What is an audit?

Audits are an essential part of risk management.  An audit of a construction site reviews various aspects of a project to ensure it is being carried out without risks to health and safety, as far as is reasonably practicable.  They provide essential feedback that ensures improvements can be made prior to an incident taking place, promoting a proactive approach to health and safety to your organisation and project team.  This can support the development of a positive health and safety culture on your site and ensure that policies, procedures and safe systems of work are implemented at all times.

Who should undertake an audit?

Under the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015, both the Principal Contractor and Contractors are required to ‘plan, manage and monitor’ their works, or work undertaken by Contractors under their control.  This should be undertaken on a regular basis, e.g. weekly, and should cover key health and safety management / construction activities, but does not need to be as comprehensive as a monthly audit undertaken by a third party health and safety consultant, who is often undertaking the role of Principal Designer / CDM Advisor on the project.  Safe Track Associates Limited can supply a Site Manager’s audit template, which can be adapted to your project, to help support Contractors and Principal Contractors to monitor their own activities on site.
